After reading the post about making a “mini-golf” version of bowling, I thought: Why not invent a golf-sized version of bowling?

What we currently call bowling will soon be called miniature bowling, because now we’re going to take a golf-course sized tract of land and cover it with 18 winding, obstacle-filled, oiled wood “lanes” hundreds of yards long.

These lanes will start off real wide. Maybe 5-10 times as wide as a standard bowling lane for the “fairway” part. As a gutter, we’ll grow some real dense vegetation on either side to stop the ball if it veers off the lane. (Since we’re already into wildly impractical territory let’s make it bamboo.)

Near the end of each of these winding lanes, they narrow to standard bowling width and of course there is a set of 10 pins.

THE RULES:

Each “lane” is over as soon as you hit any of the pins. You get as many balls as you need to do this. After each ball you roll, one pin is removed from the set of 10 end of the lane. You take your next ball from where the previous one leaves the lane. You are allowed to move the ball horizontally from the bamboo to the lane and bowl from that spot (no chip shots from the rough necessary).

If it takes, say, 4 balls to get within striking distance of the pins, you’re looking at 6 pins remaining when you try to hit them with your fifth ball.

If you miss the pins you just try again from wherever the ball stops. If that’s 1 foot from the pins, you shoot from there. If you can’t hit the pins after 10 shots, all the pins have been removed and that “lane” is over.

SCORING:

Each ball you roll adds a “stroke” to your score. Each pin you knock down at the end of the lane removes one “stroke” from your score.

So using the previous example, it takes you 4 balls to reach the pins (leaving 6 pins to hit), and you knock them all down with your fifth ball. +5 strokes for the 5 balls rolled, and -6 strokes for knocking down 6 pins.

Final total for that lane is -1 (i.e. a birdie!)

The best possible score for a lane is -9 (a strike-in-one). The worst possible score for a lane is 10.

Play 18 lanes and the lowest score wins.
