Suggestions on how to avoid overloading readers too quickly with fantastical elements, “hand wave” moments, etc based on this concept?

So, I’m not looking to become a professional writer, but I’ve been working on outlines for a superhero-type series, probably looking like a 5-part story. I want to make it at least SOMEWHAT good, of course. Here’s the general concept:

This is a world where you do have both humans and talking animals, and superpowers/super-talents exist. Superpowers/super-talents are like muscles, singing voices, etc: you have to learn to use them and train them to get better, and overuse or irresponsible use could result in consequences to your body. The human protagonist has skills in “Color magic,” and he starts out as part of what turns out to be a corrupt religious organization/cult called The Color Lords, but he has a Martin Luther-type realization of the false teachings and corruption of the organization and is forced to leave for his own safety. He is eventually involved with a team of heroes who end up taking down this corrupt religious organization and its enablers by the end of the saga.

As for the talking animals, in this universe they’re referred to as “Creatures,” and at times against certain ones there is prejudice/racism. For example, one race, the Field Mice, are victims of oppression and exploitation by some of the villains of the series, being dismissed as weak, savages, etc. Another race, Ravens, have a bad rep of being criminals, disgusting, etc.

I also would want to avoid overpowering my heroes and their teams TOO much right away, and build the team lineup slowly, and I’d plan to have the two overall main protagonists of the series suffer health consequences (like having to go to physical therapy, suffering pains/orthopedic issues, etc) when they’re forced to make a sacrifice of all their magic/superpowers to defeat the final series antagonist.

The overall tone of the series would be a mix of both outrageously funny and goofy (there’d be team banter, jokes, spoofing of cliches like “wave after wave of generic, useless minions” getting defeated in fights/battles right away), and at times extremely dark (there’s war and sacrifice, and one of the main antagonists of the series is a psychopathic human criminal leader heavily inspired by Lou Bloom, Anton Chigurh, and Owen Davian).
