[Sensitive Content: substance abuse, addiction]
The cogs of happiness are sitting in our brains just waiting to spin but life is so dismally incompetent to turn them on.
Seeing the same shapes every day is too much fucking familiarity, like demons are playing a game of “How many times can I force the human to look at the exact same thing before they go fucking insane?” Like a book, a rectangle, a car, a cloud, a fruit, toast, eggs, a circle. How many times do I have to look at these things? They’re perfectly nice things but the repetition is ridiculous. A baby screaming can be cute once, it doesn’t take long to get painful. People who draw comics say everything is made of spheres, boxes and cylinders. It’s absolutely fucking true. Start looking for it, when you get it, it’s exactly how boring life really is.
Travelling is pointless to me. We’ve all seen a building, and a tree. Once you’ve seen a tree you’ve seen them all. Sure there are pretty things, but the ontological benefit to going to the place behind a google image is just the kind of romanticisation sober people have to do to make their lives feel more meaningful. Bit like (sorry) having kids. The only genuine reason to go on holiday is to drink sweetened alcohol in your preferred climate. Not to look at new trees or differently identical buildings. And people are always the same, they’re people. It’s almost kind of racist to go somewhere for “the people”. You shouldn’t generalise what people from a certain country are like. The politics can be wild but if politics excites you like that then I’m definitely right when I say travel is stupid and dull, probably like the book you should read about the place instead which is definitely more informative than actually going.
What travel attempts to do, is satisfy the bar for life set by our favourite stories from childhood. We all want to go somewhere genuinely new, on an adventure, find out magic is real and fall in love with the heir to a kingdom at war with telekinetic aliens. That kind of profound exciting grandeur is basically what we expect from life before it actually happens. Love is the big one that is really drilled in as the one message from the stories that will actually come true, but of course, it never does. Relationships go from mediocre to miserable and anything else is less than 1%. A happy marriage is much rarer than a diamond ring.
Let’s consider what can actually happen: liking your job, getting rich, having fun with friends, having good sex, having a laugh when you’re very drunk, if you’re super lucky maybe you’ll win a free trip to disneyland.
And finally, this brings me to drugs.
You don’t have to wait for life to make you happy. You don’t have to work for it either. Because happiness is a button in your brain and YoU cAn JuSt TuRn iT On. Everything good is a pointless competition with heroin, and heroin will always win because of the supremacy of laziness. Heroin to some people might actually be “the best feeling possible in life”, basically real life heaven. That’s extremely hard to say no to, and it absolutely calls the entire premise of modern society into question. You can feel something new, actually new, like being a tourist in another world. That world is in your mind, what it feels like to exist can completely change in nature, in a euphoric way. The best kind of magic isn’t about changing the world around you, it’s about changing the feelings from which you come to believe that there is any world around you at all. Drugs can actually do that. They can fill your sensation of existing with delight, glowing colours, and hilariousness. Irresistible. The good things actually barely ever happen for loads of people, life is a series of disappointments. Drugs will always be there like a super plush mattress to save you from falling into the corruption of the principle of goodness. Don’t leave it up to god, because he doesn’t exist. The cure for all ills, pain, misery, boredom, lonesomeness, deprivation, all poof gone if you smoke snort or shoot up the right thing.
It’s not about life is a scam let’s all do heroin, that’s a notoriously bad idea. You don’t need to do heroin, there are other drugs. Weed perhaps being the perfect drug. The irresistible alternative to the scam. Substance abuse doesn’t have to be a scary, deadly, crime inducing thing. Maybe it can be a very good thing. Better than a fairy tale, better than love.
