What time/era should I set my story in?

Hi everyone!

I’m writing my first novel. I’m a few chapters in to the first draft. My writing style is not formal, and this is a story I’ve been carrying for years and have tried to write many times.

I had a dream a little over a month ago and it was like everything clicked.

Only thing I can’t decide is if I want to set the story in the recent past, present, or near future.

The recent past feels heavy and I don’t want to get current event details wrong and then the whole story is missed for details.

Same with present…

I’m thinking near future, like setting it in 2096 or something where all the characters haven’t been born yet compared to the present day we all live in. Plus then I think I could add in some relatively realistic creative things that possible could exist in the future. Robot cops, slightly overly advanced technology involved in everyday life.

My story is a pretty standard one.

Protagonist in her 30s and missed out on her original dreams in life, antagonist is grumpy and had all his plans pulled out from under him. Circumstances bring them into each others geography. He finds out he has an unexpected responsibility and needs her help. Through that she finds a new purpose and learns to dream new dreams. And they live happily ever after and all that. Cozy happy story.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has written about the near future and if you have any advice?
