I have seen a lot of people up here talking about teen clubs, but I already know how fast that could easily spiral.
Instead, I wanted to focus more on a community hang out spot. There’s always kids that can get up to no good because they need something to do. In the same breath though, I live in a town where there aren’t really major hangout spots for highschoolers. It consists of cookout and Walmart parking lots.
I always wanted a place that could be like “hey let’s go here after school” and they could be productive while still having fun. Not to mention the parents would be fine with it. Here’s my idea.
A teen cafe and lounge with a homework center.
It’s not completely fleshed out so I’ll just be spitballing a bit here.
First off, we’d have several areas. The cafe, the homework center, the lounge and arcade area, and quiet centers.
The cafe would carry typical drinks, and snacks, and would operate during the day as well! Could easily be a typical cafe during the school year and school hours. This will also help with a steady income of revenue.
Second we’d have a homework center. This would be open afterschool and during the day on weekends during the school year! (I’d also like to add that each area would be monitored because teens are teens at the end of the day.) I feel as if the homework center would be close to the cafe. It seems appropriate. They’d have access to printers, supplies, computers, group/duo/solo seating, and I was even thinking of a tutor. Perhaps in the future it could get a partnership with the school and work on exam study groups etc.
Third, the lounge and arcade area. This would be away or on another floor from the cafe and homework center. The lounge will have vending machines, tons of seating, games, a movie screen, charging stations, mini library, and perhaps more if y’all could help with ideas. The arcade would feature tons of arcade games, giant versions of classic games, maybe some gaming systems, and I was considering a PC setup but wasn’t sure.
Fourth, we’d have the quiet centers. These are for the students that just want a break to relax after school. Read a book, study, listen to music, decompress from the mental toll of being a teenager. These could be scattered about or clumped together.
So I’d also like to do events on game (football/basketball/etc nights) so kids aren’t crowding around parking lots when they’re excited afterwards, but also on the weekend! There could be anime nights, movie theme nights, dance parties, karaoke nights, the arcade and lounge would be open.
Next I kind of have an overview of paying for these things and the cost, while still maintaining the thought that this is for teenagers. I was thinking memberships. Here’s what they would kind of include:
Homework 3 free small drinks and 3 free small snacks a week (discount for bigger sizes) Access to printers, supplies, computers (?), group seating In-house homework assistance 2 guest allowed Access to discounts for in-house products hehe Discounts for cafe
Entertainment Access to lounge and arcade areas 2 or 3 free small drinks/snacks Discounts for in-house products Discounts for cafe 1 guest allowed Discounts for Game/weekend events
Ultimate Access to Homework center Access to Lounge and Arcade area 3 or 4 small drinks/snacks Discounts for in-house and Cafe 2 guests allowed Discounts for game/weekend events Entry priority for events Hears about events first
I think I’d also have daily entry options available. Maybe you don’t want a weekly or monthly or yearly membership to the homework center but want to use it for a huge senior project. You could pay maybe $10 and use it for the day.
I was thinking of an age range too. Possibly 13-19. General high school and early college age. That way there’s no unwanted pervs/adults besides the supervision and the cafe area.
I know this is a lot and this would be a lot of work and would not come about in a year or so but I’d love to hear what you all think and if you would even consider it as a good idea! Any advice, creative ideas, etc are welcomed!
