A New Reality

After five years my tongue felt foreign,
dry and numb like I’d kissed a corpse.
I couldn’t bring myself to bite off the intruder
my teeth must learn to share a new neighbor.

Licked lips suck moisture
and crack under new authority;
“I’m breaking up with you”,
spewed a swollen mouth
beaten raw from the inside.

My jaw has grown sharp
to accommodate a now familiar
bitter proprietor;
I tongue the sores that heal.
