Personal Training Studio/Nutrition Store

Here is a brief summary of my current business:

My wife and I run a personal training and nutrition coaching business. Both certified. She left nursing, also stays home with our kids. I still work a full time job and do personal training in the evening.

Been in business for about 1.5 years.

A small gym owner (in a city that is 30 minutes away) allows us to train clients at his gym for $45 per month. We live in a rural area outside of the city.

We have less than 10 clients. We have tried Facebook advertising, thumbtack,Nextdoor, etc. The only thing that seems to work is word of mouth. It seems that we have a very difficult time getting in front of people.

We have an opportunity to lease a 1500 square foot building that was a successful pizza place for a long time. $1000/month. It is on the main road from the small town to the bigger city. There is a busy gas station diagonally across the street and the high school is only a few minutes away.

The building that can be leased is split into what was the dining room(900 sq foot) and what was the kitchen (600 square foot).

So our thought is that we would try to make a small 1 on 1 personal training studio in the 900 square foot section. Leave it pretty open and offer small group classes, as well. There are no fitness class options unless driving to the city.

We would look to make the 600 square foot section into a small nutrition supplement retail store. We would look to sell protein, supplements, natural remedies, and cbd oils.

This is obviously a very big risk for us(we have 3 children and in our early 30’s). We have plenty of exercise equipment and the studio gym section wouldn’t take much… but the store front… we have nothing. No product, no shelves, etc.

We also would be taking on an extra $1000+ per month in expenses when you factor utilities, inventory, etc.

We are meeting with a business advisor later this week but trying to bounce ideas out there. Hoping someone has some retail startup experience or supplement experience
