​Plastic wrapped white object found in can of buttons

While sorting through some old stuff, I found this small object among old sewing supplies, mostly buttons. The white part inside crumbles easily and can’t be removed from the plastic wrap. It was also found in a sewed pouch as shown that I cut open to reveal what’s inside. It’s about one inch long and I can’t figure out what it be
