What is this painted wooden game or thing (?), which seems to be a commentary on gender roles, that I found at an antique shop last year?

Can’t figure out what this thing from a local vintage shop is let alone what the joke is.

Seems like a gag gift for newlyweds or something … but … what? The longer I stare at it the less I get what the joke could be. Are they talking to each other? Describing themselves? Reflecting on a situation? The parallel responses seem non-parallel.

The thing is about 2.5’ tall and has circular slots that seem like they would hold a pair of tubes that length, but what goes in, where, and why?

I asked previously on r/explainthejoke but I still don’t have a good explanation for what the mechanic would be. Old thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/ExplainTheJoke/s/NRGcrHZjeh
