It uses tropes and genre hallmarks to make you think you’re playing a psychological horror game set in a school, so you’re suspicious of everything. It even gives you the mechanics to investigate for clues, pick lockers, interrogate people in dialogue, etc., but there’s no mystery. Nothing supernatural happens. The weird occurrences all have logical explanatiosn and the “weirdly” friendly girls are just trying to get to know you better as a new student.
The more investigative you are, the more the other characters become concerned for your mental health, and you can even get in trouble for invasion of privacy. If you don’t investigate, though, you can easily just flirt with classmates, get good grades, and build a healthy social and romantic life.
