​How do you go about writing characters set in a culture you’re not apart of?

I am planning to start my very first creative writing project. I’m planning to write a story about a group of boys discovering the black metal scene in Romania and starting a band. That’s really all I have right now, I’m at the VERY beginning of this project, I’ve been brainstorming for a couple days. One issue that I’m hung up on is that I know very little about Romanian culture. I know that I just need to do a good amount of research on Romanian culture, language, social norms, etc., but I want to make sure that I avoid misrepresenting the culture or getting things wrong. Does anybody have any experience in this area?

Also, I want to do most of the thinking myself, but it would be awesome if you guys could maybe give me some ideas for the plot 🙂
