I manufacture aluminum barriers in China and am seeking feedback on its potential and business ideas for Western markets.

Hey Reddit,

I’m a manufacturer based in China, and I’m hoping to get some international perspective on a product my factory produces. I’m not here to sell anything, just genuinely looking for market insights and creative business ideas.

As you can see from the photos, the product is a modular aluminum barrier system. Its primary design is for flood protection. They are interlocking panels that can be installed around properties or in front of garage doors to create a watertight seal. They are also quite sturdy and effective at keeping out rodents.

Currently, my business is mostly domestic here in China, but I’m exploring its potential overseas, especially in North America and Europe.

I’d love to get your feedback on a few questions:

Other Applications: Beyond flood control and rodent proofing, can you think of any other creative uses for this? (e.g., temporary fencing, garden partitioning, etc.?) Target Customers: Who do you see as the primary customer in the US/Europe? Homeowners in flood-prone areas, property management companies, or construction contractors? Sales Channels: What do you think would be the best way to sell this? Direct-to-consumer online, through local distributors, or trying to get into big-box stores like Home Depot? Initial Concerns: From a potential user’s perspective, what are your first thoughts or concerns? (e.g., installation, price, durability, aesthetics?)

To comply with this subreddit’s guidelines and provide more context, here is some additional background about my business:

How long has the business been operating? Our factory has been in the aluminum fabrication business for over 10 years. This specific barrier product has been developed and sold for the last 3 years. Where is the entity/business registered? The company and factory are registered in China. Is geography a factor in finding a partner? Why/why not? Yes, geography is a key factor. We are exploring the North American and European markets, so any potential partners (like distributors) would ideally be located there to understand the local market and serve customers effectively. Is this a purely online (no physical presence) business? No, we are a manufacturing business with a physical factory and production lines. What is the proposed arrangement for the partner? We are in a very early exploratory stage. The most likely path would be a distributor/reseller model. We are not looking for partners to take equity or a director role in our company. What about capital? Does/must the partner invest? We are well-capitalized for production. We do not require a partner to make a direct capital investment in our company. A distributor would naturally invest in their own inventory and marketing. Which currency? Our factory prices are quoted in USD. What capabilities (skills) are you looking for in a partner? For anyone offering advice or considering partnership, knowledge of the local building materials market, home improvement industry, or flood protection products would be invaluable. Can the partner have input/say on the entity’s articles of incorporation? This is not applicable, as we are looking for sales-level collaboration, not an equity partnership. Do you have financial records and projections? Willing to share with a potential partner? We have solid financial records. For serious potential distributors, we are willing to share relevant business data after signing an NDA.

Thank you for reading this far! Any feedback or ideas would be incredibly helpful.
