I’ve been doing video editing for a while now, mostly for small YouTubers, some local businesses, and random freelance gigs. People usually like my work (one client even messaged me that their retention jumped from 28% to 45% after I re-edited their videos), but here’s the problem:
It feels like I’m stuck hustling for projects instead of building something bigger.
Here’s my situation right now:
Most of my clients come from word of mouth or me reaching out manually. Income is super inconsistent, one month I get 3–4 clients, then it’s dead for weeks. I don’t have a huge ad budget, but I do have time and I’m ready to grind. I’d love to move beyond just editing random projects → maybe build a niche editing service (like “editing for YouTubers” or “short-form content for businesses”), or even grow it into a small agency.
My question to the community:
If you were in my shoes, good editing skills, some happy clients, but no real system, how would you turn this into a business instead of just freelancing gig to gig?
Should I niche down hard (e.g. only YouTubers or only short-form), or go broader and try to scale with volume?
Has anyone here turned a creative skill into a proper business, and how did you approach it?
Really curious to hear your thoughts.
