I partook in national writing month last November, and I came up with a roughly 30K word novella. I’m happy that I was able to complete the challenge, but I’m debating on whether or not I should pursue revising it etc…
Here’s the synopsis: “Hyeon spent her entire life in and out of foster homes, always wishing she was enough for somebody. An opportunity to train as an astronaut allows her an escape from the painful world she lives in. Her first assignment isn’t an easy one—she and her fellow comrade Yusuf must travel to the edge of the universe and document what they find. The only downside is that Hyeon and Yusuf will return in a hundred year’s time; everyone they know and love will have passed away. This journey allows Hyeon to appreciate the value of her life, and she realizes if she wants to change, she has to do it herself—before it’s too late.”
This summary sounds pretty arbitrary re reading it…
I think to sum up a major issue, it was based on a dream I had. The main character is also horrifically based on me and my own personal experiences (not the whole going to space part but yknow), and a lot of the characters are based on people I know. I also did not plot anything out prior to writing this, so it’s really, really rough. Basically all that happens is “depressed girl goes to space, finds out life doesn’t suck, and dies.”
So, with pretty much no plot… is this even worth salvaging? Is the idea even intriguing?
If anyone is interested in taking a look at it, here it is. Keep in mind, it’s a very raw, very embarrassing first draft :’)
