​Office chair came with retractable wings/compartments

I just picked up this chair for free from FB marketplace after thoroughly frustrating the nice lady because I couldn’t find her front door.

Once I got it home I noticed these two “flaps” or “pockets” that rotate out from underneath and I couldn’t fathom what the could be for other than hiding a special pen from a coworker? (I’ve never worked in an office)
