It voids itself every year, or every 3 years, whatever you agree to. Makes divorce easier. If you’re both secretly not feeling it, you’ll just kinda let it lapse.
Edit: and think of what it’ll do for people in abusive relationships. You’ll be at city hall surrounded by people when renewal time comes.
