​Small, metal hook-like attachment on the front of my refurbished sewing. What is it for?

I’ve had this machine for almost a year, and I did t even notice this attachment until my ring caught on it while I was sewing the other day. There’s nothing about it in the manual. It’s a Bernina 560 if that helps.
