​What is this thing, it’s metal and can be opened. Inside there’s some space.

It’s attached to a table interconnecting two sofas. Found in Croatia.

What purpose does it fulfill? It can only be opened so the metal thing stands upwards. Inside it’s empty and it’s a very small container.
